The second weekend of Coachella kicked off with cool temperatures, gusty winds and dusty conditions on Friday, April 22.

While temperatures can traditionally peak near triple digits at the festival, thermometers in Indio reached only a high of 77 degrees Friday, according to the National Weather Service. In 2012, the Palm Springs Airport recorded a high of 70 degrees during the festival, making it seemingly the coldest Coachella to date.

Wind gusts reached 43 mph at the Thermal Airport and ranged between 20 to 30 mph throughout the festival fairgrounds throughout the day. Winds were expected to remain between 10 to 20 mph throughout the evening, the NWS said.

The wind caused trouble for some vendors at the festival. A large umbrella was blown completely inside-out at a drink cart.

“I fully tore my shirt fixing the umbrella,” said Jonas Immoor, 22, from San Diego, who was working the drink cart.

A windblown dust advisory was issued by the South Coast Air Quality Management District for the Coachella Valley from Thursday afternoon to Friday at 3 p.m.

Light precipitation fell overnight into Friday, leaving .02 inches of rainfall at the Palm Springs Airport, according to the NWS.

Warmer conditions were expected Saturday, April 23, with high temperatures expected to be 86 degrees in Indio, the NWS said. Winds were expected to die down a bit, with projected gusts estimated to be as high as 20 mph, the NWS said.
