Each week, publications from the Southern California News Group’s 11 properties (Orange County Register, L.A. Daily News, Press-Enterprise, San Gabriel Valley Tribune, Long Beach Press-Telegram, The Daily Breeze, San Bernardino Sun, Daily Bulletin, Redlands Daily Facts, Whittier Daily News and Pasadena-Star News) select the Athletes of the Week for their respective region.
Each athlete is then entered into the overall Southern California Athlete of the Week vote.

Zoe Prystajko, Huntington Beach: The UC Riverside-bound pitcher threw two shutouts — a three-hitter and a six-hitter — and struck out a combined nine batters to lead the Aztecs to 3-0 and 2-0 victories against then-No. 3 Villa Park and No. 1 Canyon in the Crestview League.
Kassadra Gewecke, Temple City: The Rams have nearly wrapped up the Rio Hondo League title, and Gewecke is a big reason for it. She threw a no-hitter and struck out 12 in a 1-0 win over La Cañada and had 13 strikeouts in an 11-1 win over Monrovia. The Rams are 9-0 in the RHL and Gewecke’s stats are among the best in the Southland. She is 11-1 with a 0.10 ERA with 109 strikeouts.
Adonijah Currie, Golden Valley: Currie became the state leader this season in the 200 meters with a time of 23.65 seconds to win the event at the Mt. SAC Relays. The standout junior is one of the fastest sprinters in California. She had a time of 11.73 at the Redondo Nike Track Festival earlier this season, which is the third-best 100 time in the state this year. Currie is also part of Golden Valley’s 4×100 relay team, along with with Kylee Davis, Ta’Ahjah Fann and Nevaeh Williams, that took first place at the Mt. SAC Relays and set the fastest time in the state this season at 46.03.
Amanda Marrufo, Serra: Marrufo hit .769 in three games (10 for 13) with five home runs, eight RBIs, 10 runs scored and nine stolen bases. The junior, who is a transfer and had to sit out the early portion of the season, is hitting .750 with six home runs, 12 RBIs and 19 runs scored.
Mattison Beliveau, Hillcrest: Beliveau tossed back-to-back, five-inning perfect games last week to help the Trojans post a pair of River Valley League wins over La Sierra. She registered seven strikeouts in the first game (12-0 win), and added four more strikeouts in the second game (15-0 victory). These were the fifth and sixth no-hitters of Beliveau’s career, as she had four last season while playing at Arlington. Beliveau is 6-3 with a 1.03 ERA and 69 strikeouts in 53 2/3 innings this season.
Ava Schaffel, Millikan: Schaffel pitched 14 innings in less than 24 hours to help Millikan win rivalry games against Lakewood and Long Beach Poly last week. Against Poly, Schaffel pitched a complete-game shutout with 13 strikeouts in a 6-0 victory. By winning both games, Millikan secured back-to-back Moore League championships.
