A 29-year-old Norwalk man was sentenced this week to five years in prison for shooting a good Samaritan in Costa Mesa.

Max Diamond had pleaded guilty to one count of attempted murder.

Police responded to a shots-fired call at 5:40 a.m. on March 2, 2021, in the 2000 block of Harbor Boulevard, near the 55 Freeway, police said. When they arrived, they learned that a 30-year-old man from Costa Mesa had sustained a gunshot wound and was taken to a hospital; he had a wound to his neck.

The victim had heard a commotion between a man and a woman and when he heard her scream, he went to investigate, then saw her running away as Diamond pursued, police said. The woman managed to get away. Diamond then turned his attention to the Costa Mesa man, pulled a gun and shot him.

Diamond ran away but police tracked him down, followed him to an Anaheim gas station and made the arrested.
