Coachella 2022: Kanye West pulls out of festival, report says

Rent Computer Hardware You Need, When You Need It

Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, will no longer perform at the 2022 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, according to a report on Monday, April 4, from TMZ.

Ye’s departure from the bill, less than two weeks before the festival begins, happened after a series of incidents and a petition from fans.

The rapper was expected to headline the final day of the festival, which happens April 15-17 and April 22-24 at the Empire Polo Club in Indio. As of 9:30 a.m. Monday, Coachella’s website still had Ye listed on the lineup. Representatives from festival promoter Goldenvoice have not yet responded to this breaking news.

In mid-March, two weeks before the Grammy Awards, Ye was reportedly banned from performing at the event due to his online behavior, according to a report in Variety.

Ye did not attend the Grammys in Las Vegas on April 3, but he did win two awards: best rap song for “Jail” and best melodic rap performance for “Hurricane.”

His reported removal from the Grammys came days after the rapper was suspended by Instagram for violating policies on bullying, hate speech and harassment with a post that included directing a racial slur at “The Daily Show” host Trevor Noah.

Noah had called out the rapper over his continued harassment of ex-wife Kim Kardashian, with whom he shares four children. Ye also depicted kidnapping and burying Pete Davidson, with whom Kardashian is in a relationship with, in his music video for “Eazy.”

Thousands of people signed an online petition calling for Ye to be removed from the Coachella lineup on Change.org. Three days after it was posted, it had garnered 20,000 signatures. At the time Ye backed out of Coachella, it had almost 50,000 signatures.

The erratic behavior also extended to fellow Coachella headliners.

In February, Ye declared on Instagram that he wouldn’t perform at Coachella unless Billie Eilish apologized to Travis Scott after she stopped a show to give a fan an inhaler. Ye perceived Eilish’s actions as a diss of Scott, who is facing lawsuits after multiple people were injured in the crowd and 10 died at his Astroworld festival in Houston last year.

Ye also posted that he was bringing Scott to Coachella with him. Scott was originally booked to headline Coachella in 2020 and was expected to return in 2022 before the Astroworld tragedy. Ye later deleted the post.

Ye appeared at the festival’s most recent edition before the pandemic, bringing his star-studded Sunday Service worship program to an area adjacent to Coachella’s campgrounds on Easter morning in 2019. He last headlined the festival in 2011.

Coachella’s twin weekends are sold out and are expected to draw around 125,000 people each weekend to the event.
