Oscars 2022 Shocker: Did Will Smith really hit Chris Rock in the face on live TV?

In the most confusing moment at the Oscars since the wrong movie was announced as best picture at the Academy Awards, Will Smith and Chris Rock got into a fight on live television. Maybe.

Rock had come on stage to present the award for best documentary feature, and decided to riff a little bit on the big names in the front rows.

Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz, a married couple who are both up for best actor and actress, respectively, took a few gentle shots.

Then Rock turned to married couple Will and Jada Pinkett Smith, making a crack about her closely cropped hair, asking if she was making “G.I. Jane II.” Pinkett Smith has been open about having alopecia, which has caused hair loss.

Smith seemed to laugh, but moments later strode on stage and appeared to hit Rock in the face.

The sound went off on the telecast for longer than the normal amount of time you get for a bleeped word or two.

Apparently uncensored clips on Twitter showed Rock, stunned, announce “Will Smith just smacked the (stuff) out of me on live television.”

Smith, back in his seat, shouted at Rock, his lips easy to read as he said, ‘You keep my wife’s name out of your (bleepin’) mouth.”

“That was, uh, greatest night in the history of television,” Rock said.

Was it real or a bit? It seemed real based on the reactions of everyone you could see on TV.

What is undeniable was that it completely upstaged Questlove, director of the brilliant “The Summer of Soul,” which moments later was announced by Rock as the winner of the documentary feature Oscar.
