ANAHEIM – Miles Scott looks like a high school freshman. He talks like a high school freshman.

He did not play like a freshman Friday.

Scott made the defensive play of the game and his two-run single in the fifth inning provided the winning margin for Servite in a 3-2 win over Santa Margarita in a Trinity League baseball game at Servite High.

The win completed a three-game sweep for the Friars. Servite beat Santa Margarita 7-2 on Tuesday and 6-1 on Wednesday.

Scott who is listed as 5-foot-8 and 140 pounds, is a right fielder who bats and throws left-handed. In the first inning, Santa Margarita’s Blake Wilson hit a deep fly to right field. Scott ran a perfect route to chase down the ball and make a running catch just a few feet from the outfield fence.

Santa Margarita scored two runs in the top of the fifth inning, one on Servite’s errant pickoff throw and the other on Zach Fjelstad’s RBI triple.

In the bottom of the fifth, Servite’s Trevor Schmidt walked with the bases loaded and two outs to score pinch-runner Andy Mike. Scott followed with a sharp ground ball base hit up the middle to send home Jarrod Hocking from third base and Agustin Gutierrez from second to give the Friars a 3-2 lead.

Friars coach Shawn Gilbert said Scott was impressive enough during the fall baseball season to earn the starting position this spring.

“We’re almost through March,” Gilbert said, “so I keep telling him, ‘you’re not a freshman anymore.’ I threw him into the fire as a freshman and it was ‘let’s see what ya got.’”

Scott went into Friday’s game with a .387 average and was third on the team in hits with 12. He contributes like a senior but still has that “just glad to be here” freshman shyness.

“This is a great group of fellas to play with,” Scott said. “I love playing with these guys.”

Servite pitchers Chris Grothues and Colin Galvin combined to limit Santa Margarita to two hits. Santa Margarita pitchers Collin Clarke and Tanner Warady allowed only four hits, two of which came in Servite’s three-run fifth.
