Each week, publications from the Southern California News Group’s 11 properties (Orange County Register, L.A. Daily News, Press-Enterprise, San Gabriel Valley Tribune, Long Beach Press-Telegram, The Daily Breeze, San Bernardino Sun, Daily Bulletin, Redlands Daily Facts, Whittier Daily News and Pasadena-Star News) select the Athletes of the Week for their respective region.
Each athlete is then entered into the overall Southern California Athlete of the Week vote.

Daniela Leon, Walnut: The Mustangs’ senior pitcher has a been a major factor for some of their biggest wins this season. And for a team that won just three games last year, the Mustangs are suddenly ranked No. 7 in Division 5 due to big wins against teams in upper divisions. Leon threw a four-hit complete game in a 3-1 win over Bishop Amat. She pitched a complete game, and did not allow an earned run in a 8-1 win over Bonita. And in Friday’s Hacienda League opener against Los Altos, she threw another complete game in a 5-3 win in eight innings.
Sophia Marrero, El Segundo: In six games last week, Marrero hit five home runs for the Eagles, including one in four consecutive games. She finished the stretch 11 for 22 (.500) with 11 RBIs. The Eagles are 14-2 and currently the No. 2 ranked team in the Daily Breeze Top 10 rankings.
Amelia Weber, Western Christian: Weber, who is headed to Howard, tossed a pair of shutouts, as the Lancers grabbed sole possession of first place in the Ambassador League. She opened the week with a one-hitter and 13 strikeouts against Woodcrest Christian. Weber followed with a two-hitter and seven strikeouts in a 3-0 victory over Aquinas, becoming the first pitcher to shut out the Falcons in league play in eight years. She also went 2 for 3 at the plate in both games.
Rylee McCoy, Oaks Christian: McCoy had a stellar week in Oaks Christian’s three wins last week, going a combined 8 for 10 from the plate with two doubles, five home runs, nine runs scored and nine RBIs. McCoy hit .800 in that span with a slugging percentage of 2.400. The Lions are No. 1 in the Daily News top 10 rankings and still unbeaten at 12-0 this season.
Isabella Alonso, Long Beach Poly: Alonso struck out eight batters and pitched a complete-game shutout to lead Long Beach Poly to a 3-0 upset win on the road against Lakewood on March 15. Alonso was the 2021 Moore League softball pitcher of the year. She will play Division I softball at Cal State Northridge.
Brianne Weiss, Orange Lutheran: The left-hander fired a no-hitter and struck out 10 in an 11-0 win against No. 14 Rosary to open the Trinity League. Weiss improved to 8-1 in the circle, notched her third shutout and lowered her ERA to 0.65.
