Police are investigating a fight between students at Cypress and Downey high schools following a softball game on the Cypress campus, officials said Monday.
A parent who appeared to intervene in the physical altercation on March 8 was allegedly assaulted, Lt. Scott Ausmus of Cypress Police Department said.
He said the parent sustained minor injuries and was taken to Los Alamitos Medical Center before being released.
Ausmus said police have reviewed surveillance video of the confrontation between “several” female minors, including students from Cypress and softball players from Downey. The fight occurred around 5:15 p.m. outside the main gym at Cypress High, he said.
Cypress’ athletic schedules show that the school hosted Downey in a frosh-soph softball game March 8 at 3 p.m. on the Centurions’ varsity field.
Ausmus said police are seeking to identity participants in the altercation, the primary aggressors and to what extend a bat was used.
No arrests have been made, he said.
Anaheim Union High School District stated last week that at least two Cypress students were involved, district spokesman John Bautista said.
Bautista said the incident spilled into the parking lot and was stopped by an assistant principal, track and field coach and several parents and students.
Ausmus said Cypress police officers responded to altercation but the fight had stopped before their arrival.
Downey Unified School District issued a statement Monday that it was aware that “Downey High School students and parents were attacked and physically assaulted after a freshman softball game” at Cypress High.
“Our students and parents were on their way to their respective vehicles near the gym and were attacked by a group of females,” Downey Unified stated. “One of our parents who was attempting to prevent the attack was assaulted and was transported to a local hospital.
“We are fully cooperating with Cypress Police Department as a part of their ongoing investigation. We are deeply disturbed by this unprovoked attack on our students and parents and hope the individuals involved are held accountable for their actions.”
