THE GAME: The Angels pulled off a game-winning rally in the ninth inning for the third consecutive game, getting past the Italian national team, 4-3, on Wednesday at Tempe, Ariz.
PITCHING REPORT: In his third appearance and first start of the spring, left-hander Mitch Farris gave up two runs on five hits over three innings with no walks and one strikeout against Italy’s WBC team. … Main closer candidates Kirby Yates and Jordan Romano each pitched a scoreless inning, while Hunter Strickland also did not allow a run in his one inning of work. Romano threw eight of his 11 pitches for strikes while Strickland was 7 of 10. … Veteran Drew Pomeranz gave up a run on two hits in his one inning, with two strikeouts. … Jayvien Sandridge had two strikeouts in the eighth and Sam Bachman pitched a scoreless ninth for the win. … Angels left-hander Sam Aldegheri is on the Italy roster but did not pitch during exhibition games in Arizona on Tuesday and Wednesday.
HITTING REPORT: Jeimer Candelario’s game-tying home run in the eighth inning was his second homer in two games and set up his game-ending fly ball in the ninth for the victory. … The Angels had just one hit, a Zach Neto single, in three scoreless innings against starter Gabriele Quattrini, who has pitched in Italy’s top league for the past five seasons. … Jorge Soler hit a first-pitch home run in the sixth inning, his first of the spring. … Vaughn Grissom gave the Angels their first run with an RBI single in the fourth inning then stole second base one pitch later before also swiping third. … Jose Siri, Nelson Rada and Donovan Walton also had a stolen base.
DEFENSIVE REPORT: Walton started a double play from second base in the ninth by tagging runner Miles Mastrobuoni and flipping the ball to first base to retire Dante Nori. … Third baseman Oswald Peraza opened the game by making a backhand play toward the line for the out on Italy leadoff hitter Jon Berti. … At second base, Grissom made a backhanded short hop on a hard ground ball up the middle for the first out of the second inning. … Peraza started a 5-6-3 double play in the third inning on a grounder from Vinnie Pasquatino.
