SANTA ANA — The St. John Bosco baseball team used clutch hitting from junior left fielder Noah Everly and quality pitching from senior Trevor Heishman to pull off a 3-2 victory at Mater Dei in a Trinity League game that lasted 10 innings Tuesday night.

Everly went 4 for 5 at the plate with two RBIs, including a two-out RBI triple that scored a go-ahead run, 2-1, in the 10th inning.

Bosco junior first baseman Moises Razo’s RBI single scored Everly to go up 3-1.

“It (means) a lot,” said Everly, who also hit a two-out solo home run to put the Braves up 1-0 in the top of the first inning. “Beating our rival Mater Dei, it was a lot. We’re winning. We’re solid. We’re going to continue this. We’re ready.”

Heishman allowed four hits, one run, two walks and struck out seven batters in eight innings, which is his season high this season. The 6-foot-4, hard-throwing left hander, who signed with Memphis, said his mindset against Mater Dei was to do everything he could to keep his team in the game.

“Just to compete all the way though, not to let up anything,” Heishman said. “No freebies. That was a big thing for me and it allowed me to stay in the game.”

Bosco freshman pitcher Brayden Krakowski relieved Heishman in the ninth inning and picked up the win. He allowed two hits, one run and two walks in 1 2/3 innings. Junior Gavin Cervantes closed out the game by getting the final out in the 10th.

Bosco improved to 17-4 overall and 9-1 in the Trinity League. The Braves are in first place in the league standings. They are three games up over second place with five league games remaining. Bosco is aiming to win the program’s first Trinity League title since 2017.

“It took some mental toughness towards the end,” St. John Bosco coach Andy Rojo said. “Really well pitched game by both sides. We just gathered them up in extra innings and said it’s going to be a game of who puts together the best mentality tough at-bats, so the guys did a great job.”

Mater Dei (13-9, 3-7 Trinity League) was led by junior pitcher Jackson Campbell (Notre Dame commit), who allowed three hits, one run, two walks and struck out four batters in 6 1/3 innings. Senior Landon Gordon relieved Campbell and went 2 2/3 innings and allowed four hits, two runs and two walks.

“I thought we pitched the ball good enough to win,” Mater Dei coach Richard Mercado said. “They came up with some hits and we didn’t.”

Mater Dei sophomore third baseman Sebastian Navarro led of the bottom of the fourth inning with a single. Senior first baseman Brandon Thomas hit a double that put runners on second and third with no outs. Senior second baseman Dylan Wetzel drew a walk to load the bases. Senior designated hitter Bradley Beaudreau, who signed with Fordham, hit into a double play, but a run scored to tie the contest at 1.

Bosco freshman third baseman Aaron Garcia hit a leadoff double in the top of the 10th inning. Junior shortstop James Clark moved Garcia to third with one out. Junior designated hitter Jaden Jackson grounded out to first for the second out of the inning.

Consecutive two-out RBI hits by Everly, who was double shy of hitting for the cycle, and Razo, the team’s No. 4 hitter, put the Braves up 3-1 heading into the bottom of the 10th.

However, Mater Dei was not done yet.

Navarro stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the 10th. With a 3-2 count, he drew a walk that brought in run that made the score 3-2.

Thomas also had a bases loaded situation with two outs. However, he hit a line drive to Cervantes, who knocked down the ball just off the pitcher’s mound and tossed it to first for the final out to secure Bosco’s 3-2 victory.
