The shuttered JCPenney at the Village at Orange shopping mall will be demolished. An excavator and a team of construction workers began demolishing the dormant retail store on Thursday, April 24, to make way for a proposed condo community for the backside of the mall property.
In attendance Thursday were the mall’s owner, TRC, housing developer based Integral Communities from Newport Beach, and the homebuilder Lennar.
Most of the now 53-year-old mall’s interior and rear property were torn down in 2024. Only the exterior-facing merchants were left standing.
Integral and city must first now consider an environmental impact report, and then host community engagement sessions before proceeding with the housing plan.
