A High Desert retreat by Todd Nickey, co-founder of the AD100 design studio Nickey Kehoe, is on the market for $888,000.

Named Heiwa Cottage, this 840-square-foot Yucca Valley abode is “a hybrid between a Scandinavian fisherman’s cottage and a Japanese country home,” the listing reads. It features two bedrooms, two bathrooms and an original brick fireplace in the living room.

“We literally designed the house around, and inspired by, the fireplace,” Nickey said in a press release announcing the listing.

Records show Nickey and his husband, Greg Holcomb, bought the Yucca Valley property for $142,000 in March 2021.

Nickey, whose firm is known for its work with A-listers like Natalie Portman, Mark Ruffalo and Sarah Paulson, described the home as being “in a sad state when we first saw it.”

That’s before he transformed the home for use as an income property given its close proximity to Joshua Tree National Park, just 15 minutes drive away. It’s also near local shops and restaurants.

Guests have described the property as “beautiful,” “peaceful” and “private.”

The house sits on 5 acres surrounded by bristled Joshua trees and other native desert plants. A reviewer noted in June 2024, “So many animal sightings made it feel even more remote,” mentioning quail, rabbits and yips of coyotes at night.

“The setting is ethereal, while the cottage is incredibly tastefully decorated,” another reviewer commented in February 2025.

Inside, there’s a dining nook and a minimalist kitchen with stainless steel appliances and floating shelves.

The primary bedroom has an ensuite bathroom with a walk-in shower and Waterworks faucets. A patio opens it to the in-ground pool and spa, and outdoor shower.
