A gunman accused of killing a man in the victim’s RV near Anaheim who supposedly had made unwanted advances to a woman, was convicted Monday, March 17, of murder.

An Orange County Superior Court jury found Ricardo Martin Campos, now 34, guilty of first-degree murder for the May 14, 2019, death of Eli Gamaliel Victoriano-Che, 28.

Earlier that day, prosecutors said, Victoriano-Che was in a motel room with Johanna Leon-Pateyro, who would accuse Victoriano-Che of making unwanted sexual advances toward her.

The police were called, prosecutors said, and Victoriano-Che left the motel.

But Leon-Pateyro — who allegedly hid methamphetamine from the officers and give them a false name — remained angry at Victoriano-Che.

She called Campos and several other friends and the group headed over to the RV where Victoriano-Che was staying, on the 8400 block of Augusta Drive in an unincorporated area near Anaheim.

A friend of Victoriano-Che’s initially refused to let Campos and the others into the RV, but the group forced its way in after Campos brandished a firearm, prosecutors said.

In the midst of an apparent attempted robbery, prosecutors said, Campos shot Victoriano-Che, seated at a table, once in the head.

Campos fled to Texas, but Leon-Pateyro and two other people identified him as the gunman. He was found by law enforcement and returned to California for his trial.

The defense argued that authorities had the wrong suspect.

Campos is scheduled to be sentenced on May 16. Leon-Pateyro was convicted of manslaughter.
