Orange County high school competitive cheer teams can win CIF Southern Section, CIF State and even national championships.
Beckman won them all.
The school’s competitive cheer teams won CIF-SS, CIF State and added a national championship to its season of traditional competitive cheer.
Beckman won the Large Varsity Non-Tumbling Division I competition at the Universal Cheerleaders Association (UCA) national championships last month in Orlando, Fla.
The Patriots won a CIF State title in the Non-Tumbling Large School division this school year. (Orange County’s Brea Olinda and El Dorado also won state cheer championships.)
The Patriots are CIF-SS Division 4AA champions, too.
Jason Vaca, Beckman cheer coach for 10 years, called the three championships, capped by the UCA title, “a wild dream that came true.”
“That these kids did what they did is truly remarkable,” Vaca said. “A majority of them come into our program with no cheer experience.”
Vaca also is proud of the team’s academic success. He said more than 90 percent of the cheer team has a grade-point average of 3.5 or better.
“This was our third year at the UCA cheer championships,” Vaca said. “It’s our Super Bowl. Winning it is a huge testimony to the kids’ hard work and dedication.”
