3.9 earthquake centered northwest of Malibu rattles LA area

A magnitude 3.9 earthquake was reported Sunday night in Los Angeles County, centered around 6 miles northwest of Malibu.

It happened at 8:17 p.m., the U.S. Geological Survey reported on its website.

No damage was immediately reported. Quakes generally don’t cause damage below 4.0, according to the USGS.

The quake follows a 4.1 magnitude quake on Sunday, March 9, a week earlier in the same general area.

The latest quake, originating at a depth of 8.9 miles, was described as minor by the Southern California Earthquake Data Center, which includes Caltech and USGS.

By around 8:45 p.m., the USGS had received reports of people feeling the quake at a weak intensity as far away as Santa Barbara, Lancaster, Riverside and Mission Viejo.
