J.D. Davis, a veteran corner infielder, signed a minor-league deal with the Angels on Friday, including an invite to spring training.

Davis, 31, has spent parts of eight seasons in the majors. He was productive as recently as 2023, when he hit 18 home runs with a .738 OPS for the San Francisco Giants in 144 games.

The Giants released Davis in spring training last year, which was notable because it occurred shortly after Davis won his arbitration hearing against the Giants, being awarded a salary of $6.9 million. The Giants had to pay him just $1.1 million in termination pay.

Davis signed with the Oakland A’s, who traded him to the New York Yankees in June. The Yankees released him in August, and he finished the season in the minors with the Baltimore Orioles. A right-handed hitter, Davis hit .218 with a .631 OPS in 157 major-league plate appearances. Davis hit .153 with a .478 OPS in two Triple-A stops.

Davis has played 320 games at third base and 76 games at first in his major-league career. With the Angels, he would provide another option to give them some coverage behind oft-injured Anthony Rendon at third. Davis could also play some first, giving left-handed hitting Nolan Schanuel a break against left-handed pitchers.
