FULLERTON — Donovan Oday had a career-best game and the Cal State Fullerton men’s basketball team took control early to defeat Denver, 74-59, on Sunday afternoon at Titan Gym.

Oday scored a career-high 21 points on 9-for-10 shooting and led the Titans (4-8) in rebounds (eight) and assists (three). Kobe Young had 13 points on 5-of-8 shooting, while John Mikey Square added 11 points, going 7 for 9 at the free-throw line.

Denver had an early 5-0 lead before Square got the Titans going with a tip-in and a three-point play, the beginning of a 19-2 run that gave the hosts a 19-7 lead with 8:28 left.

Fullerton shot 54% (14 for 26) from the field in the first half, opening a 36-22 halftime lead while holding Denver to 32% (8 for 25) shooting. The Titans kept attacking the rim after halftime. They held a 42-28 lead following a Kendrick De Luna dunk and extended the margin to as much as 20 points (54-34) on an Oday layup with 12:57 left.

Denver (6-7) got within 11 points twice, but an Oday 3-pointer with 5:30 left and his dunk on Fullerton’s next possession extended the lead back to 16 points and the hosts closed it out from there.
