MISSION VIEJO — Mater Dei’s football team capped an undefeated season and sealed a likely national title by defeating De La Salle 37-15 in the CIF State Open Division final on Saturday night.
Dash Beierly passed for a season-high 355 yards and Jordon Davison rushed for two scores as the Monarchs (13-0) raced past the Spartans (12-1) at Saddleback College for a second consecutive California championship and fifth overall.
The score was close for a good stretch of the second half. Mater Dei led 23-0 at halftime but De La Salle trimmed its deficit to 23-15 going into the fourth quarter.
Mater Dei entered the final riding an 18-game winning streak and ranked No. 1 in the nation by multiple polls.
The Monarchs were selected to the state championship game after defeating rival St. John Bosco 31-24 in the CIF-SS Division 1 final on Nov. 29.
Mater Dei first-year coach Raul Lara won his first state title. He lost twice in the finals as the coach at Long Beach Poly.
