The Rams traded running back Cam Akers to the Minnesota Vikings on Wednesday in exchange for a conditional swap of 2026 draft picks, the team announced.
The Rams will receive the Vikings’ sixth-round pick in 2026 and send back their seventh-rounder should those conditions be met
After a limited role in the season-opening victory over Seattle, in which he ran 22 times for 29 yards and a touchdown, Akers, 24, was left inactive for the Rams’ Week 2 loss to the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday, .
Head coach Sean McVay called the move a “coach’s decision” and expressed confidence in Kyren Williams taking over as the Rams’ starting running back.
McVay said on Monday that general manager Les Snead was involved in trade talks surrounding Akers, and that the 2020 fourth-round pick from Florida State likely would not return to the team. The coach also expressed confusion about Akers’ public statements about not understanding the team’s decision.
“That’s unfortunate but I feel like it was very clear in regards to our dialogue, so that’s surprising to me,” McVay said. “I really care a lot about Cam and I’m appreciative of some of the things that we’ve gone through and where we ended up getting to in terms of our relationship and our ability to communicate clearly, which is why is kind of tough for me to hear that there is confusion. But I wish him nothing but the best.”
The final chapter in Akers’ time in Los Angeles comes a season after he left the team due to a dispute over the size of his role in the run game.
