Taylor Ward injury adds a frightening moment to Angels’ loss

TORONTO — Nothing went right for the Angels with the bases loaded Saturday, but the worst moment of them all was the one in which they actually scored a run.

Taylor Ward was hit in the face by a pitch, sending him to the ground. He was bleeding as trainers attended him for a few minutes before he was carted off the field. There was no immediate word on his condition.

The run the Angels scored when Ward was hit was all they managed in a 6-1 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays on Saturday afternoon.

Ward was hit with one out, but then Mike Moustakas struck out and Matt Thaiss hit a popout. The Angels also left the bases loaded in the second and sixth innings.

The Angels were 0 for 10 with runners in scoring position on their way to a pivotal loss against the Blue Jays, whom they are chasing for the final wild card spot.

The Angels are now five games behind the Blue Jays and 4-1/2 behind the Houston Astros, pending their game on Saturday night. After losing four of the first five games against Toronto, the Angels lost the tiebreaker if the teams end up finishing the regular season with the same record.

The Angels scored just two runs in the two games, and losing Ward from the middle of the order certainly won’t help as they try to salvage the final game of the series and regain the momentum they have lost.

It’s unclear what the Angels would do to replace Ward, because they already are missing injured outfielders Mike Trout and Jo Adell.

The shock of seeing their teammate bleeding spoiled the brief period when they were actually winning the game Saturday.

After the incident, the Angels were up 1-0. They failed to add to that, and then in the bottom of the inning Reid Detmers gave up a two-run homer to Santiago Espinal.

Detmers got one more out before his day was over after 4 2/3 innings and 91 pitches.

Detmers might have gotten deeper in the game, but he needed 76 pitches to get through the first four innings, including 27 pitches in the second inning.

Aaron Loup gave up two runs in the seventh and Jaime Barría gave up two more in the eighth, putting the game away for the Blue Jays.

More to come on this story.
