A modern desert retreat marketed as “the only Palm Springs house ever owned by icon Elizabeth Taylor” is on the market for $4.95 million.
Located on Prescott Drive in Old Las Palmas, the low-slung 3,876-square-foot house dating to 2001 sits behind a wall and gates on a nearly two-thirds-acre lot. It has four bedrooms, five bathrooms and an open-concept living space that opens onto the pool area.
News archives contend Taylor lived in or owned the house from 2004 until she died in March 2011 at age 79. The association with the Oscar-winning actress earned the house the name “Casa Elizabeth” and became a theme in marketing it as a short-term rental. But her name does not appear on property records for the house.
According to Renee Brown, director of education and associate curator at the Palm Springs Historical Society, Taylor is known only to have leased a home on Hermosa Place with her third husband, Mike Todd, in 1957.
She adds there are no other documents or residences for her.
Southern California News Group also reached out to the Elizabeth Taylor Estate, but representatives did not respond in time for publication.
The documents related to the house rather show it previously sold for $1.9 million in April 2004 to Erik Sterling and Jason Winters, the latter of whom managed and befriended Taylor in her final years. Archival news reports show they regularly hosted her at their home in Hawaii. The men run a brand marketing and personal management firm and are cofounders of Kathy Ireland Worldwide, which has partnered with the new owner who has since rebranded the house “Casa de Coachella.”
The renovated home opens into a grand foyer with soaring ceilings and designer finishes. An open-concept living area lies beyond with disappearing glass walls for indoor-outdoor entertaining.
Towering palms and pruned hedges surround the backyard with a pool and built-in cabana.
A roof covers the outdoor kitchen with a barbecue, a refrigerator, a sink, tiled countertops and peninsula seating. Staged photos show it and the nearby patio dining and living area mirror the layout of the interior.
Inside, a fireplace with a new slat-wood surround anchors the living room in the all-white great room opposite a casual dining area and the kitchen.
The house has two primary suites, each with spa-inspired bathrooms. They feature deep soaking tubs, walk-in showers, dual vanities and direct outdoor accessors.
Sandy Upchurch of Signature Real Estate Group has the listing.
Records show the current owner is Fred Bin, who bought the house in March for $3.75 million. Bin, the CEO of Westlake Village-based real estate company Zoom Casa, buys, renovates, stages and resells homes through his new partnership with Ireland dubbed Zoom Casa Powered By Kathy Ireland Worldwide.
