Shortstop Zach Neto, the Angels’ first-round pick in the 2022 MLB Draft and their consensus No. 2 prospect, is among 38 players who received an invitation to big league camp as a non-roster player.
Catcher Logan O’Hoppe, the Angels’ No. 1 prospect, will be in camp as a member of the 40-man roster.
Among the Angels’ top 10 prospects, according to Baseball America, catcher Edgar Quero (No. 4) and right-handers Sam Bachman (No. 7) and Ben Joyce (No. 10) were also invited to camp. Right-hander Chase Silseth (No. 3) is on the 40-man roster.
Quero is an intriguing invite because he is just 19, coming off his first full professional season.
The Angels also invited a handful of veterans with major league experience, most of whom had been previously reported. Right-handers Chris Devenski (a Cal State Fullerton product) and Jonathan Holder have each pitched at least five years in the majors. Devenski was an All-Star with the Houston Astros in 2017.
The overall list of 38 is larger than usual because the Angels have 10 players from the 40-man roster competing in the World Baseball Classic. Angels pitchers and catchers will hold their first workout on Wednesday, and the first full-squad workout will be on Feb. 20.
The full list:
Right-handed pitchers: Sam Bachman, Coleman Crow, Chris Devenski, Mason Erla, Jonathan Holder, Ben Joyce, Luis Ledo, Victor Mederos, Luke Murphy, Gerardo Reyes, Fernando Romero, César Valdez, Nash Walters, Austin Warren, Jacob Webb, Kenyon Yovan
