HUNTINGTON BEACH — Kaz Hampton had come close this season to breaking the Edison school record for most 3-pointers in a game, but he finally got over the hump Wednesday evening.

The senior scored 29 points and made a school record nine 3-pointers to lead the Chargers to a 68-48 victory over Villa Park in the first round of the CIF-SS Division 2AA boys basketball playoffs.

Edison (20-9) travels to Orange Lutheran for a second-round game Friday. Orange Lutheran was a 69-52 winner over Aliso Niguel on Wednesday.

“It feels amazing,” Hampton said. “It’s surreal. I never knew I could do something like that, but I got the open shots. It wasn’t all me, it was my teammates. They got me open and I just hit the shots.”

Hampton broke Trey Wilborn’s record of eight three-pointers, which was set last season.

The Chargers got off to a quick start, scoring the first eight points of the game before Villa Park (18-11) called a timeout.

Edison added to its lead thanks to Hampton, whose teammates often found him open in the corners.

“He gave me a lot of assists tonight,” said Edison senior Dylan Hughes, who had seven assists. “He’s a great shooter. He’s gotten really close this season. He’s had eight, he’s had seven, he’s had six multiple times. Tonight was the night he got nine, so I’m glad for him.”

Edison’s defense and rebounding kept it in the lead. Hughes added nine rebounds to go with his 17 points.

Dane Johnson added six points with eight rebounds for the Chargers.

Edison held a 26-point lead in the fourth quarter before pulling its starters out.

The Chargers outrebounded Villa Park 32-25.

“Rebounding is something we stress,” Edison coach Rich Boyce said. “You don’t have to be big to rebound. You just have to want to do your job and everyone did their job tonight. They competed hard on every play. It was a great team win and a fun environment. It was tough because Villa Park is very good and well coached. It’s a fun win for us.”

“It starts with defense,” Hampton said of what Edison needs to do to beat Orange Lutheran. “Keep them under 12 points every quarter. We have to box out their big men and get rebounds. Once we stop them on defense, then we can translate that on offense.”
