After an SUV crash killed five people on a rural road south of Sacramento, a man thought to be the lone survivor carjacked a driver who stopped to help, the California Highway Patrol said.

The solo-vehicle crash happened around 5:30 p.m. Thursday on the two-lane River Road (Highway 160), along the Sacramento River near Freeport. A Cadillac Escalade believed to have been carrying six people went off the road and hit a tree on the river’s east bank. Three women and two men were killed, the CHP said.

When the driver of a Volkswagen sedan pulled over moments later at the scene of the crash, a man commandeered the car and drove away. The carjacker is thought to have come from the Cadillac, the CHP said.

Alerted of the carjacking, Sacramento County sheriff’s deputies spotted the Volkswagen and chased it to Elk Grove, where the thief abandoned it on Elk Grove Boulevard near the Valley Hi golf course.

Fleeing on foot, the carjacker ran through yards and then climbed a fence and ran across the golf course. Deputies found a suspect on a residential street at the course’s east edge, and he was taken into custody.

The suspect was said to be unhurt, as was the person whose car was stolen.
