“I felt like through the whole game we kept 100% confidence in ourselves, believed in our group, knew that shots were going to start falling, knew we were going to get stops and we put a run together,” Turner said. “It was special so I’m glad we got it done.”

Bosco outscored Mater Dei 46-17 in the second half and improved to 22-3 overall and 7-0 in the Trinity League.

“When we’re playing defense like that second half, it’s super scary,” Turner continued. “We can match up with anybody in the country. We just have to keep that energy and let our defense lead to offense and just keep going from there.”

St. John Bosco coach Matt Dunn echoed Turner’s sentiments.

“I tell our guys, we’re one of the best teams in the country when we do things right,” Dunn said. “And for whatever reason, you have to give them some credit, we really struggled in the first half and we showed in the second half a pretty amazing run against a really proud program and a really good team.”

However, it was a tale of two halves as Mater Dei led 40-19 at halftime.

Mater Dei senior forward Zack Davidson scored 14 points in the first half and finished with a game-high 23 points and nine rebounds.

Turner, a junior guard who is committed to Loyola Chicago, scored Bosco’s first seven points but Mater Dei led 17-12 at the end of the first quarter. Mater Dei pushed their lead to 24-14 early in the second quarter before a highlight fast-break dunk by Harrington cut Mater Dei’s lead to 24-16 with five minutes left in the first half.

Meanwhile, Mater Dei closed the second quarter on a 16-3 run and extended their lead to 40-19 at halftime. Harrington and Turner combined for 15 of Bosco’s 19 first-half points.

“They’re both gifted, especially in the open floor and once we finally started settling down, we were able to get out in the open floor,” Dunn shared.

Early in the second half, Harrington threw down another highlight reel-worthy fast-break dunk, which cut Mater Dei’s lead to 42-26 and more importantly swung the momentum to Bosco. The 6-foot-5 sophomore point guard finished with 19 points and three rebounds.

Back-to-back three-pointers by Turner cut Mater Dei’s lead to ten points. Bosco sophomore forward Kade Bonam and freshman guard Brandon McCoy Jr. both made big free throws during the Braves’ 23-5 run in the third quarter.

However, Mater Dei still led 45-42 heading into the fourth quarter.

A three-point shot by Harrington tied the game at 45 early in the fourth quarter. Mater Dei’s Davidson made one of two free throws to put the Monarchs back up 46-45 but that was their last lead of the game.

A three-point-shot by senior center Xinyi Li put Bosco up 48-46 with about five minutes to go.

Turner’s and-one made it 53-46 with 3:18 left in the fourth quarter. The 6-foot-4 shooting guard finished with 22 points and two rebounds.

A layup by senior guard Delyle Williams, who finished with a team-high seven rebounds, put Bosco up 55-46 with 2:57 left in the game. Mater Dei fought back and cut Bosco’s lead to 59-53 with 35.7 seconds left in the game.

However, Turner sunk several big free throws and Bosco won 65-57, which marked the team’s 18th straight Trinity League win on their home court.
