LA HABRA – After allowing Troy to keep things interesting for three quarters, the Sonora boys basketball team used a quick scoring burst at the start of the fourth quarter and pulled away for a 64-54 victory Friday that locked up a third straight Freeway League championship.

Yoda Oke led the Raiders (22-4, 8-0) with 22 points, and his 3-pointer 40 seconds into the fourth quarter capped an 11-2 run that began with Evan Castillo’s 3-pointer in the closing seconds of the third quarter.

The Warriors (18-8, 5-3) had been tied or in the lead five times in the second quarter, and a 6-0 run brought them within 40-39 with 2:35 left in the third quarter.

But Sonora countered when Sam Espinoza hit a layup for 42-39 with 1:21 left, then Castillo buried his trey for a 43-39 margin.

Oke could not get his shot going until the second quarter, when he erupted for 12 points. He opened and closed the quarter with 3s, sandwiched around three field goals. He also pulled down four of his seven rebounds in that stretch.

His first bucket came after Rayaan Khan muscled inside for a layup and Troy’s first lead, 11-9, 30 seconds into the second quarter.

The game went back and forth before Troy Jenkins hit a 3-pointer for a 26-24 lead, then Oke scored three times in the last 90 seconds, the last a trey with .2 seconds on the clock. That countered a trey by Joshua King that had pulled Troy within 30-27.

King and Vander Ploog had eight points apiece in the second quarter, and each finished with 13 points.

Sonora’s defense held King to one field goal in the second half, a 3-pointer, and Ploog’s only two field goals were scored with offensive rebounds.
