The family of slain Riverside County Sheriff’s Deputy Darnell Calhoun will receive a mortgage-free home.
The nonprofit Tunnel of Towers Foundation provides such homes for the families of first responders and veteran families.
“Darnell and his wife were high school sweethearts who were saving money to purchase a home of their own,” Frank Siller, the foundation’s chairman and CEO said in a news release. “I am honored to provide his family with a forever home, which will be a permanent tribute to her husband’s service and sacrifice.”
Calhoun was shot and killed in the line of duty Friday, Jan. 13, becoming the second Riverside County deputy to die in the line of duty in the past 16 days.
Calhoun was survived by his pregnant wife, Vanessa, two boys and his parents, the foundation’s website states.

Foundation spokesperson Trevor Tamsen said Vanessa Calhoun has accepted the offer, but is keeping the location of the new home private.
The community is set to bid farewell to Calhoun, who lived in Murrieta, on Saturday, Jan. 21, with a 50-mile procession from a Murrieta mortuary to a Rancho Cucamonga church. The public is invited to line the streets and attend the 10 a.m. service at Abundant Living Family Church.
The funeral will be livestreamed on the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department’s Facebook page and YouTube channel.
