LOS ANGELES — The Dodgers bought themselves some infield depth on Thursday.

In a cash deal, the Dodgers acquired utilityman Yonny Hernandez from the Oakland A’s. The switch-hitting Hernandez played 55 games for the Texas Rangers and Arizona Diamondbacks over the past two seasons, most of them at third base (39). The A’s claimed him off waivers from the Diamondbacks last month but designated him for assignment this week after making a pair of acquisitions (Jace Peterson and Aledmys Diaz).

Hernandez, a 24-year-old Venezuelan, is listed at 5-foot-9, 140 pounds – prompting the nickname “Mosquito.” Hernandez has never hit much. In parts of seven minor-league seasons, he has a .262 average, a .712 OPS and only five home runs in more than 2,200 plate appearances. But he has walked (325) more than he has struck out (307) and played five positions – second base, third base, shortstop, left field and center field.

In his brief taste of the big leagues, Hernandez hit .198.
