Vertical construction could start soon on the $5 million renovation of Downtown Disney that will reimagine the west end of Disneyland’s outdoor shopping mall with a new midcentury modern design.

Disneyland filed building permits valued at $5.4 million in early December with the city of Anaheim for Downtown Disney construction, according to city records.

Vertical construction has not yet started on the Downtown Disney west end project, according to Disneyland officials.

The commercial construction permits filed with the Anaheim Planning and Building Department call for a new 8,300-square-foot retail building with room for five shops. Also in the works: A new bathroom and employee break room.

An event space with a 1,250-square-foot stage, shade structure and 21 lights are also in the plans, according to the permits.

The former AMC Theaters along with Starbucks West, Earl of Sandwich and Sugarboo & Co. were demolished in February as part of a multiyear project that will reimagine the Downtown Disney outdoor shopping center. Work had slowed in recent months on the leveled dirt lot surrounded by colorful construction walls where the AMC Theaters once stood.

The Din Tai Fung soup dumplings chain and Porto’s Bakery and Cafe are headed to Downtown Disney as part of the major renovation that will see updates to the décor and menus at Ralph Brennan’s Jazz Kitchen, Catal and Uva Bar.

Downtown Disney’s West End was once envisioned as the location for a fourth Disney hotel project that was canceled in 2018 during a rift between the city and its largest employer.

Since then, Disney has proposed an ambitious Immersive Theme Park westside expansion project that envisions a theme park on the Downtown Disney and Lilo and Stitch parking lots woven amid the Disneyland Hotel and Paradise Pier Hotel (soon to become the Pixar Place Hotel). Disney officials describe the westside site as more of a theme park expansion than a new “third gate.” The westside site links up with Downtown Disney near the former ESPN Zone and the demolished AMC Theater.

The latest Downtown Disney renovations are not part of the DisneylandForward project. No construction work has begun on DisneylandForward as Disney continues to submit development approvals to the city as part of a multiyear specific plan process.
