Rams QB Matthew Stafford enters concussion protocol

THOUSAND OAKS — Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford was placed in the concussion protocol, coach Sean McVay announced Wednesday.

McVay said there’s still a possibility Stafford plays on Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals. Stafford officially entered the concussion protocol on Tuesday, according to a team spokesperson.

“Still anticipating and having the optimistic approach that there’s a possibility that he’ll be ready to go,” McVay said about Stafford.

McVay said the medical team determined that Stafford sustained the concussion during last week’s loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Stafford wasn’t evaluated for a potential concussion during the game, with McVay adding that he had no indications of that being a possibility throughout the road matchup.

“How we got to that point it was ultimately the doctor’s decision just based on asking the specific questions that they go through (after the game),” McVay said. “It’s more importantly about the person than the player in these types of things. Nobody is more of a competitor and wanting to be out there with his teammates than Matthew.”

If Stafford can’t play versus the Cardinals, backup John Wolford would likely get the start at quarterback. Quarterback Bryce Perkins is also an option, per McVay.

“We’re not going to be ready to rule anything out,” McVay said. “I know Matthew is going to do everything in his power to try to be able to be ready. We’ll see and take it a day at a time.”
