DOWN THE STRETCH

• Del Mar begins its ninth Bing Crosby fall meet Friday with the $75,000 Let It Ride Stakes for 3-year-olds at a mile on the turf. The 13-day meet will have a daily first post of 12:30 p.m. The only exception will be Thanksgiving Day when first post will be 11 a.m. The seaside track is coming off its most successful meet ever, a 31-day summer season that saw it establish a record daily average handle of $18.6 million and an incredible average field size of 9.1 horses, best among all major tracks in the nation.

• The Breeders’ Cup announced it set another record for all-sources handle during its two-day event at Keeneland Race Course. Keeneland handled $189,060,373, a 3.4% increase over the 2021 Breeders’ Cup at Del Mar. It was an 18% increase from the total handle of $160,472,893 during the 2020 event at Keeneland during the pandemic. On-track handle for the two days was $28,326,478. Saturday’s on-track attendance was 45,973 and the two-day attendance total was 85,824. Next year’s Breeders’ Cup is at Santa Anita.

Flightline runs away with Breeders’ Cup Classic

• Ramon Vazquez won his first Santa Anita riding title, 25-20 over Juan Hernandez, and Peter Miller earned his fourth fall meet training title and sixth overall at the Arcadia track as the 17-day meet concluded Sunday. Miller edged Philip D’Amato, 16-15. “I’m blessed, this is big for me because not everybody who comes to ride at Santa Anita has made it (leading jockey) in such a short time,” Vazquez said. The 38-year-old Vazquez, represented by Bill Castle, won four stakes races, two behind Umberto Rispoli’s six.
