Centennial High School’s Matt Logan said he is “not interested” in Mater Dei’s upcoming opening for a head coach.
Mater Dei coach Bruce Rollinson announced last week that he will not return in 2023, and Logan answered a question the following day about his interest in the Monarchs’ position.
“I’m very happy here,” Logan said after the Huskies’ 31-28 loss to Mission Viejo in the CIF Division 1 quarterfinals Friday. “I’ve got about five to six years before I can actually retire and our pension is good, and that’s a consideration obviously. … I’m treated very well (here). We’ve got great administration support, always have. I’m on my fifth principal.
“(We’ve got) great parent support, and our kids come here and expect to work hard and play hard, and they do that. Outside of that, there’s no reason for me to leave. (I’m) not interested.”
The Huskies have been one of Mater Dei’s top rivals for years. The schools play nonleague games and scrimmage and have clashed in the postseason.
Logan, who recently finished his 26th season leading Centennial, started his coaching career at Mater Dei as a freshman coach for one season.
He said he was caught off guard by Rollinson’s announcement on Nov. 10.
“I was really surprised to hear that, especially because I think a couple months ago he announced he was going to return (for 2023),” Logan said.
“He’s obviously a legendary coach. I know him personally, and he’s a great man. He gave me an opportunity to start my career and see what high school football and coaching is like, so I feel honored to have learned underneath him.
