FULLERTON — The Cal State Fullerton men’s basketball team found another way to win on Sunday night.

The Titans overcame early foul trouble and struggles at the free throw line to pull out a 94-85 win in double overtime against Vermont at Titan Gym.

“It was a heckuva win for us,” Fullerton coach Dedrique Taylor said. “Another opportunity for this club to win a different style of basketball.”

Like the Titans, Vermont was an NCAA Tournament qualifier last season after going 28-5, including 17-1 in the America East Conference.

The Catamounts were in position to beat Fullerton at the end of the first overtime, but Nick Fiorillo missed the second of two free throws with 0.9 seconds left and the game continued on.

The Titans (2-1) took their biggest lead of the game 87-83 on a three-point play by Jalen Harris with 1:01 left in the second overtime.

After a missed 3-pointer on the other end, Tory San Antonio made two free throws with 38.2 seconds left to extend the lead to 89-83 and Fullerton continued to pull away down the stretch.

“That was a great team win, we really had to fight it out,” Harris said. “It’s not just about one person, not just about two people, it’s about all 14-16 of us, and I think we all did a good job keeping our spirits high and helping each other out.”

The Titans were looking for the second big upset of the weekend for an Orange County-based Big West Conference team after UC Irvine beat No. 21 Oregon 69-56 on Friday night in Eugene, Ore.

San Antonio carried the Titans in the first half, shooting 4 for 5 from 3-point range and scoring 17 points as Fullerton took a 37-36 lead into the break.

Fullerton played most of the first half without starting center Vincent Lee, who was called for his second foul with 14:10 left in the half.

Lathaniel Bastian replaced Lee and contributed eight first-half points, but also missed four straight free throws midway through the opening half.

Vermont took its biggest lead of the first half 30-23 on a contested dunk by Ileri Ayo-Faleye, but the Titans came back with a 7-0 run sparked by a 3-pointer from Harris.

San Antonio made his fourth 3 of the half to move Fullerton ahead 35-34 with 58 seconds left.

“He does a little bit of everything,” Taylor said of San Antonio, who finished with a team-high 21 points. “He can guard, he can defend, he can rebound and, obviously, he can score.”

Bastian closed the first half with a jump hook that put the Titans on top 37-36 heading to the break.

Vermont scored the first 11 points of the second half and appeared headed for a one-sided win, but the Titans rallied back and tied the score 52-52 on two free throws by Max Jones with 7:39 remaining.

Neither team led by more than one possession the rest of the second half.

Latrell Wrightsell Jr. made a pair of free throws with 9.6 seconds remaining to put Fullerton ahead 65-63, but Dylan Penn scored on a drive on the other end to tie the score and send the game to overtime.

“They’re a nightmare matchup because they shoot the ball from all different spots on the floor and their point guard is their best post player,” Taylor said of Vermont. “This group fought through all of that and made it their advantage.”
