Each week, publications from the Southern California News Group’s 11 properties (Orange County Register, L.A. Daily News, Press-Enterprise, San Gabriel Valley Tribune, Long Beach Press-Telegram, The Daily Breeze, San Bernardino Sun, Daily Bulletin, Redlands Daily Facts, Whittier Daily News and Pasadena-Star News) select the Athletes of the Week for their respective region.

Each athlete is then entered into the overall Southern California Athlete of the Week vote.

Jayden Hernandez, Godinez: He won the elite division boys race at the Dana Hills Invitational, finishing nine seconds ahead of his closest competitor. Hernandez completed the 3-mile course in 14 minutes, 35.1 seconds. He won his first three races this season, including at the Laguna Hills Invitational. Hernandez this past track and field season qualified for the Nike Outdoor National where he ran the mile in 4:20. “He is a tireless trainer,” said Godinez cross country coach Stephen Fedele. “He takes it very seriously.” Hernandez has a 4.04 grade-point average and is taking four AP/honors classes.

Jerry Misaalefua, Carson: Misaalefua rushed for 229 yards and five touchdowns as Carson defeated Cleveland 55-12 last week. He also recorded four tackles and one quarterback hurry on defense.

Ajani Smith, Golden Valley: The Grizzlies improved to 2-0 in the Foothill League after Smith had six catches for 94 yards and two touchdowns in a 34-20 victory over Hart Friday, Sept. 23. Smith also had two interceptions to anchor the defense in an all-around performance.

Cameron Rhone, Long Beach Poly: Rhone broke the Long Beach Poly boys cross country school record in the 5k with a time of 14 minutes and 59 seconds at the prestigious Nike Portland XC meet on Saturday, Sept. 24. The senior set a personal best and finished third against a national-caliber field.

Jacob Chambers, Rancho Cucamonga: With C.J. Tiller still sidelined because of a concussion, Chambers made his first start at quarterback and completed 23 of 28 passes for 373 yards and three touchdowns to help the Cougars to a 39-21 victory over previously-undefeated Vista Murrieta. Chambers tossed two touchdowns to Jonah Dawson (98 and 64 yards) and another to Jason Harris (5 yards). Chambers completed completed 18 of 22 passes for 260 yards in the first half alone as Rancho Cucamonga grabbed a 26-0 lead by halftime.

Richie Munoz, Bishop Amat: The dual-threat QB threw four touchdown passes and ran for a TD in a 35-7 victory over Damien. Munoz threw for 209 yards and three of his TD passes went to senior Delano Franklin. On the ground, Munoz led all rushers with 115 yards. Munoz opened the game with a 63-yard touchdown run that gave the Lancers a lead they never relinquished.
