Each week, publications from the Southern California News Group’s 11 properties (Orange County Register, L.A. Daily News, Press-Enterprise, San Gabriel Valley Tribune, Long Beach Press-Telegram, The Daily Breeze, San Bernardino Sun, Daily Bulletin, Redlands Daily Facts, Whittier Daily News and Pasadena-Star News) select the Athletes of the Week for their respective region.

Each athlete is then entered into the overall Southern California Athlete of the Week vote.

Matthew Kline, Hillcrest: Kline rushed for 222 yards and three touchdowns on 36 carries to help lead the Trojans to a 24-7 nonleague victory over Lakeside. He established career highs for carries, rushing yards and touchdowns with that performance. Kline, a 5-foot-9 running back, is averaging 127.7 rushing yards per game this season. The Trojans wrap up their nonleague schedule Thursday against Tahquitz.

Christian Lundsberg, Canyon: He completed 27 of 38 passes for 353 yards and six touchdowns in the Comanches’ 48-19 nonleague win over Pacifica. His sixth touchdown pass was the 54th of his Canyon career and set a school record. Lundsberg (6-4, 205) this season has completed 75 percent of his passes for 1,379 yards and 23 touchdowns with one interception. “To throw 50 touchdowns in a career is amazing to me,” Lundsberg said. Canyon is 4-0 and No. 19 in the Orange County Top 25.

Rowan Heidt, Oak Park: The Eagles moved to 4-0 thanks to Heidt’s stellar performance in a 59-6 win over Nordhoff. The senior tallied 140 yards rushing and three touchdowns on 10 carries. He also had two catches for 83 yards and a score. Oak Park will face Thousand Oaks (3-0) in its Canyon League opener Friday.

D’Jon Pittman, Cabrillo: Pittman had six receptions for 136 yards and two touchdowns, including a 50-yard, game-winning catch-and-run touchdown with 11 seconds to go in Cabrillo’s 26-24 comeback win against Lynwood. The Jaguars trailed 18-0 but fought back to win the game. Cabrillo will play Compton at Compton College on Friday at 7 p.m.

Kyle Cascalenda, West Torrance: Cascalenda had three touchdowns (two receiving, one rushing) in a 28-21 win over Peninsula. He also recorded seven tackles and sealed the win with an interception in the fourth quarter.

Jake Jones, Temple City: The Rams’ 6-foot-1 junior completed 19 of 26 passes for 434 yards and five touchdowns as the Rams improved to 2-1 with a 40-26 win over Mountain View. It was the second big game of the season for Jones. In the Rams’ season-opening 54-0 win over Keppel, Jones threw for 310 yards and six touchdowns.
