NEWPORT BEACH — San Clemente and Corona del Mar waged a defensive clash last season in their nonleague game, producing a combined total of only 10 points.

The Tritons and their opportunistic offense flipped the script Friday.

Quarterback Broderick Redden rushed for a touchdown and tossed another and running back Blake Allen rushed for 127 yards and a score as No. 10-ranked San Clemente flashed its potential in a 23-6 victory against No. 7 Corona del Mar at Newport Harbor High.

The Tritons (4-0) opened the season with three victories against teams from the San Diego’s Avocado League but impressed against the short-handed Sea Kings (3-1).

San Clemente scored two touchdowns off three forced turnovers and didn’t commit a turnover.

Last season, Corona del Mar defeated host San Clemente 7-3.

San Clemente led 20-0 at halftime and answered the Sea Kings’ second-half touchdown with a 21-yard field goal by Kai Trager in the fourth quarter.

Allen rushed for 127 yards on 21 carries while Redden, a first-year starter, completed 8 of 12 passes for 94 yards.

San Clemente outside linebacker Nolan Reid stayed hot with a sack and a fumble recovery in the second half.

Redden closed the first half strong by tossing a 16-yard touchdown to wide receiver Thomas Hartanov with two seconds left. Redden scrambled to his left on the third-and-11 play and patiently found Hartanov open for the 20-0 lead.

San Clemente capitalized late in the first half after an interception by safety Brad Gerken, who returned the ball 34 yards to the Sea Kings 31.

The Tritons also scored off a turnover forced by their special teams.

Late in the first quarter, a hustling Max Gonzales recovered a muffed punt at the Corona del Mar 25-yard line, setting the stage for Redden. The junior scored on a 1-yard sneak shortly after a 22-yard burst by Allen.

San Clemente punter Jake Poole booted the ball that Gonzales recovered.

Corona del Mar played for the second consecutive week without UC Davis committed quarterback David Rasor, who has an ankle injury.

The Sea Kings also were again without running back Evan Sanders and tight end Trent Merriman, both of whom have knee injuries and haven’t played this season.

But quarterback Kaleb Annett showed his promise in leading Corona del Mar on a 14-play, 80-yard scoring drive to open the second half. Colin Pene capped the drive with a 3-yard TD run to make it 20-6.

Annett passed for 242 yards. Cooper Hoch was his top target with 10 catches for 97 yards,

Next week, San Clemente plays host to another Sunset League school in Edison while Corona  del Mar takes on San Juan Hills at Newport Harbor High.
