HUNTINGTON BEACH — After being sidelined with injuries, two key members of the offense for Corona del Mar’s football team returned to the field for the Sea Kings’ Sunset League opener against Fountain Valley on Thursday night at Huntington Beach High School.

After missing the past three games with a high-sprain of his right ankle, starting quarterback David Rasor was back in action, although on a limited basis. He played just three series, but Rasor still managed to complete 7 of 13 passes for 91 yards and two touchdowns as the Sea Kings rolled to a 42-7 victory over the Barons.

Wide receiver Russell Weir, who had also been sidelined due to an injury, also returned and finished with four receptions for 64 yards, including a 20-yard touchdown catch.

Rasor was behind center for the Sea Kings (1-0, 5-1) on the game’s opening drive.

Starting the drive on the Sea Kings 20-yard line, Rasor completed his first three passes — to Jack Louck for 12 yards, to Colin Pene for 9 yards and to tight end Giuliano for 8 yards.

Rasor threw an incompletion on first-and-goal from the Fountain Valley 8 and then connected with Pene for an 8-yard touchdown on the next play.

“We wanted to throw the ball a lot to start,” Rasor said. “I didn’t feel like I missed a beat. I had the rhythm under me. It felt like a good, solid drive.”

Later in the first quarter, Rasor led the Sea Kings on a 51-yard scoring drive, capping the drive with a 35-yard scoring pass to Cooper Hoch, one of the county’s top receivers.

Rasor said he should be at 100 percent in next week’s Sunset League game against Los Alamitos

“The time was really kind of hard on me for a little bit,” Rasor said. “That was the first time I missed a high school game of any sort. You kind of realize how much you love it, how much you appreciate it.”

Sea Kings backup QB Kaleb Annett, who had been excellent in three consecutive starts leading up to the contest against the Barons (4-2, 0-1), played most of the game Thursday night. He completed 14 of 21 passes for 203 yards and three touchdowns.

In games against Los Gatos, Palos Verdes and San Clemente, Annett completed 65 of 112 passes for 749 yards and five touchdowns.

“He’s as talented as they come,” O’Shea said. “He’d be a starter at most any high school in the county. We challenged him to be as good and equal to the senior ahead of you and he has proven that. It was a huge gap having to start three games for us and (he) just played out of his mind.”

The Sea Kings had as many as nine starters out with injuries through the first five weeks of the season.

“We needed to reset our entire program,” O’Shea said. “We were feeling sorry for ourselves. What you saw tonight was nothing more than a team playing the Corona del Mar way.”
