Football roundup: Mater Dei cruises to win over La Mirada; Will Burns shines for Trabuco Hills in Week 3

Mater Dei scored all of its points in the first half Friday in a 35-0 win over La Mirada at Santa Ana Stadium.

After Jeilani Davis intercepted a La Mirada pass to give Mater Dei (4-0) good field position, Elijah Brown threw a touchdown pass to Jordan Onovughe to give the Monarchs a 7-0 lead.

Nathaniel Frazier ran for a 41-yard touchdown to extend Mater Dei’s lead to 14-0.

Brown threw a touchdown pass to sophomore Marcus Harris to put the Monarchs up 21-0 at the end of the first quarter.

Mater Dei linebacker Leviticus Su’a intercepted a La Mirada pass and returned it for a touchdown midway through the second quarter.

Frazier ran for a 98-yard touchdown to complete the scoring for the Monarchs.

In other games Friday:

Sunny Hills 16, Brea Olinda 0: Sunny Hills had an excellent defensive performance to give coach David Wilde his first win as the team’s head coach.

William Brown had an interception for Sunny Hills (1-2) that set up a score and Connor Irons recovered a fumble in the fourth quarter.

Johnny Ramirez and Nathan Lee each had touchdowns for the Lancers and All-County kicker Mathias Brown made a field goal.

No. 3 Santa Margarita 63, Mullen (Colorado) 6: Santa Margarita scored 42 points in the first half in a drubbing of Mullen of Colorado at Saddleback College.

Jaxon Potter completed 12 of 14 passes for 151 yards and three touchdowns for the Santa Margarita (3-0). The running game, led by freshman Skylar Lendsey and senior Jake Foye, ran for five touchdowns.

Bain Eiseman led the Eagles in receiving with three receptions for 62 yards and a touchdown. Emmett Mosley, Sean Embree and Kyle Brody also caught touchdown passes for Santa Margarita.

Noah Sulick had 2.5 sacks and Collins Acheampong deflected four passes.

Bekkem Kritza, a sophomore quarterback transfer from Fairview, Colorado, made his debut for the Eagles and completed all seven of his pass attempts for 84 yards with a touchdown.

No. 25 El Dorado 35, Valencia 8: El Dorado scored 35 unanswered points to win the “Bell Game” against crosstown rival Valencia.

Gaven Rivera caught a touchdown pass from Nate Bento to give El Dorado (4-0) a 7-0 lead early in the first quarter.

From there, the running game took over for the Golden Hawks. Isaiah Quintero ran for two touchdowns while Diego Soria and Wyatt Tway added touchdowns of their own.

El Dorado will have a bye week and then play at Chino on Thursday, Sep. 22.

Valencia (0-4) will host West Covina Thurs. Sep. 15.

Laguna Beach 24, Capistrano Valley Christian 17: Ethan Das completed 14 of 20 passes for 223 yards and two touchdowns in Laguna Beach’s win over Capo Valley Christian at Aliso Niguel High.

The game was tied at three at halftime. Das threw a 32-yard touchdown pass to Jackson Rodriguez to give Laguna Beach (2-2) a 10-3 lead.

Capo Valley Christian (2-1) responded with a touchdown run by JP Synnott to tie the game.

Das threw a 63-yard touchdown pass to Ryner Swanson for the highly-recruited tight end’s first score of the season. Swanson caught seven passes for 121 yards.

Nick Rodgers ran for a 7-yard touchdown to extend Laguna Beach’s lead to 24-10.

Eagles sophomore quarterback Nate Richie threw a touchdown pass to Logan Kelly with 29 seconds remaining in the game but failed to recover the ensuing onside kick.

Santa Ana Valley 35, Godinez 0: Santa Ana Valley forced three turnovers in the third quarter to take control of the game against Godinez.

The Falcons led 6-0 at halftime and the three turnovers all led to touchdowns to put the game away. Santa Ana Valley (3-1) had 167 yards in the first half compared to just 18 for Godinez.

Mario Trujillo and Junior Martinez combined to rush for 165 yards and two touchdowns for Santa Ana Valley.

The pair each had rushing touchdowns in the third quarter and backup quarterback Andres Salado ran for two touchdowns in the second half.

Juan Prado had two sacks to lead the Eagles defense and deflected multiple passes.

Caleb Orellana and Carlos Valenzo led the Godinez (1-3) defense that had two sacks and two forced fumbles.

No. 25 Trabuco Hills 56, Tustin 16: The Mustangs improved to 3-0 with the home win over the Tillers (0-4) on Friday.

Trabuco Hills senior quarterback Will Burns rushed for 137 yards and three touchdowns on four carries. He passed for 113 yards a touchdown. Burns committed to Texas Tech for baseball as a shortstop.

The Mustangs play at Newport Harbor, No. 12 in the Orange County top 25, on Friday. Newport Harbor is 3-1 after defeating Capistrano Valley on Friday.

No. 8 Yorba Linda 39, No. 19 San Juan Hills 0: The Mustangs (4-0) defense shut down the offense of the Stallions (0-4) and created turnovers.

Cornerback Jason Escobar and safety Dylan Gardner had interceptions for Yorba Linda which has won 14 of its past 15 games. Yorba Linda plays at Simi Valley in Friday. Simi Valley is 3-1 after going 10-1 last season.

No. 15 El Modena 36, Segerstrom 0: The Vanguards (3-0) got their second shutout with a home win over the Jaguars (1-3).

El Modena sophomore quarterback Xzavior Guess threw four touchdown passes. Troy Parker had two touchdown receptions.

The Vanguards have not allowed a touchdown this season. Their previous wins were against Santa Ana 38-0 and Sunny Hills 43-3.

Fullerton 20, Santa Fe 0: Rainy-night games often are won in the trenches. The Indians (2-2) got the strong play they needed up front to beat Santa Fe (0-4) at Pioneer High in Whittier.

Indians coach Richard Salazar credited defensive linemen Isaac Galvez, Jaden Pulsifer and David Williams for leading the defense and the offensive line for another stalwart effort.

Junior running back Deshawn Cobbs rushed for 203 yards and two touchdowns on 27 carries.

Fullerton plays at home against Brea Olinda on Friday.

Katella 28, Portola 0: After three close losses the Knights (1-3) got their first win by a large margin at Glover Stadium.

Katella’s first three results were losses of 3-0 to Laguna Hills, 28-24 to Katella and 14-9 to Peninsula.

Fountain Valley 45, Marina 14: The Barons continued their turnaround with a school record-setting win Friday at Huntington Beach High.

They rushed for 458 yards. That Barons coach Dave Gutierrez said, broke a school record set in 1977 against Marina. Running backs Abdel Habibeh, Ben Pham and Max Smith combined for the yardage total running behind the line of Gio Berenti, Dylan Bunbury, Donovan Cannon, Dylan Frisch and Matthew Mena and tight end Scott Peshke.

Fountain Valley is 3-1. The Barons were 1-9 last season.
