BELLFLOWER — Junior running back Tray Pinkney rushed for 112 yards and two touchdowns as Bellflower beat Calvary Chapel 37-14 in Bellflower Friday night.

Bellflower (3-0) scored the game’s first points when senior quarterback Adonis Thomas rolled out to his left and hit junior wide receiver Robert Morrow for a 41-yard catch and run as the Buccaneers led 6-0 in the first.

The Buccaneers amassed more than 328 yards of total offense with 286 coming on the ground.

Calvary Chapel (1-2) answered with a touchdown of their own when sophomore quarterback Matthew Peters scored on a two-yard run.

The Eagles lead 7-6 with 9:51 left in the first half.

The Bucs’ ensuing drive would payoff as Thomas plunged into the end zone on a one-yard run, giving Bellflower a 13-7 lead in the second quarter.

The Eagles did not answer this time but instead turned the ball over on downs.

The Bucs added to their lead after Pinkney evaded one tackler, to go untouched 31 yards into the end zone.

The Bucs led at halftime 19-7.

Bellflower opened the second half with a huge kickoff return to the Eagles’ 40-yard line. However, the drive stalled at the Eagles’ 17-yard line after Thomas fumbled the snap on third down.

Calvary Chapel failed to capitalize on the turnover and punted the ball away.

Bellflower’s ground game would chew up time and yardage on their next possession, punctuated by freshman running back William Taylor’s 12-yard touchdown right through the middle of the Eagles’ defense.

“I love him,” said Bellflower senior running back Tray Pickney. “He blocks for me. I block for him. We work out, we do everything together. We work as a team to score, get touchdowns and get wins.”

The Eagles tried to get back into the game after Peters threw a back shoulder fade to junior wide receiver Gavin Ghahyasi for a 13-yard touchdown.

That was as close as the game would get as Bellflower added two touchdowns with Pickney scoring the game’s final points.

Pickney and Taylor combined for 207 yards rushing and three touchdowns as the Bucs remain unbeaten.

“They work really well together,” said Bellflower football head coach Jason Miller. “They block for each other. They care about each other. That is going to make us really effective in the run game.”
