A suspected drunk driver from Santa Ana ran a red light in Lake Elsinore and caused a crash that left one person dead and two others injured on Saturday, Aug. 13, authorities said.
She then fled the scene before being arrested, they said.
The collision happened at about 10:30 p.m. where Lake Street meets Grand Avenue, Riverside Sheriff’s Sgt. Brandi Swan said. The suspect’s SUV, heading north, struck a sedan, which was facing south and turning east onto Lakeshore Drive, Swan said.
The driver whose car was struck was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said in a news release. Their identity was withheld pending the notification of relatives.
Two passengers riding in that car were taken to hospitals with “major injuries,” but were expected to survive.
The driver who fled was arrested a few minutes later within blocks of the crash, Swan said. She was identified as 32-year-old Margarita Rosales of Santa Ana, and booked on suspicion of manslaughter, DUI, and two counts of felony hit-and-run, Swan said.
She remained in custody at the Southwest Detention Center in lieu of $75,000 bail as of Sunday afternoon.
