SANTA ANA — A 20-year-old Irvine man appeared in court Monday on two murder charges in connection with a drug-fueled fiery crash that killed a couple in Irvine.

Jack Frederick Varga Nagl was charged Wednesday with the two counts of second-degree murder and one count of possession of a deadly weapon — metal knuckles, all felonies, as well as three counts of battery and one count each of vandalism and damaging a wireless device to prevent calling police, all misdemeanors, according to court records.

Nagl faces a sentencing enhancement for committing an offense while released from custody.

Nagl is accused of killing 62-year-old Kamiar Ashraf and his 57-year-old wife Roxanne Ashraf, both of Irvine, on July 17, according to Orange County Sheriff’s Department Sgt. Scott Steinle.

Nagl was accused of battery and vandalism and damaging the wireless device on Aug. 1.

The crash occurred about 8 p.m. at Meadow Valley and Spring Valley, according to Irvine police Lt. Bill Bingham. When authorities arrived a Mini Cooper was fully engulfed in flames.

Nagl was driving a Volkswagen Golf that collided with the Mini Cooper, Bingham said. Nagl was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs, Bingham said, adding that speed and drugs appeared to factor into the cause of the crash.

Nagl did not enter a plea when he appeared in court in the Central Justice Center in Santa Ana. His arraignment was rescheduled for Aug. 31 in the Harbor Justice Center in Newport Beach.
