Football roundup: Buena Park earns first win since 2019; San Clemente, Tesoro triumph in Week 0

Buena Park snapped a 22-game football losing streak with a 49-21 victory Friday over Cerritos at Buena Park High.

It’s the Coyotes’ first win since they beat Firebaugh in Week 3 of 2019.

Jadin Saxton had three receiving touchdowns for Buena Park (1-0) and added two interceptions on defense.

Western New Mexico commit Azim Muhammad had two touchdowns for the Coyotes.

Buena Park will host Savanna Friday, Aug. 26.

No. 9 San Clemente 48, Oceanside 7: Broderick Redden threw four touchdown passes to lead San Clemente to a blowout win over Oceanside at Oceanside High.

The junior quarterback completed 10 of 14 passes for 198 yards. Redden had been in a quarterback battle with Dylan Mills this summer, but Mills’ transfer from JSerra had been held up and Redden made the most of his opportunity to start.

Thomas Hartanov caught five passes for 121 yards with three touchdowns for San Clemente (1-0). Blake Allen rushed for 117 yards on 15 carries with two touchdowns.

Drew Shanley caught a 20-yard touchdown pass from Redden in the third quarter.

San Clemente will host Torrey Pines on Friday, Aug. 26, in its home opener.

No. 16 Tesoro 35, La Costa Canyon 33: Tesoro was able to withstand a second-half rally from La Costa Canyon to win its season opener at Tesoro High.

The Titans had a 35-7 lead with three minutes remaining in the third quarter, but allowed 26 unanswered points.

Tesoro running back Travis Wood had over 150 rushing yards with two touchdowns.

Dalton Hurd returned an interception for a touchdown just before halftime to give the Titans a 21-7 lead.

Quarterback Evan Pierce capped a 38-yard scoring drive with a 3-yard touchdown run to put Tesoro ahead 28-7 midway through the third quarter.

Mason Wolfe caught a 25-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter to extend the lead to 35-7.

Hurd had two sacks for Tesoro and Owen Burnside had a sack and a fumble recovery.

Irvine 31, Portola 10: Irvine rushed for 260 yards in a win over Portola in a nonleague game at Irvine High.

Kendyn Beaver led the Vaqueros with 145 yards on nine carries. Nathan Sasaki rushed for 65 yards with a pair of touchdowns.

Junior quarterback Joseph Tierney also had a touchdown run early in the third quarter.

Irvine (1-0) trailed 10-2 at halftime but rallied for 22 points in the third quarter. Deacon Moss intercepted a pass and returned it for a touchdown for Irvine in the third quarter.

Crean Lutheran 42, Costa Mesa 7: Crean Lutheran quarterback Gavin Rogers had an efficient day in a blowout win over Costa Mesa at University High.

Rogers completed 8 of 11 passes for 202 yards and three touchdowns for Crean Lutheran (1-0).

Santa Margarita transfer Ty Benefield caught two passes for 85 yards and two touchdowns. He also led the team in tackles with six.

Andrew Duberow had two rushing touchdowns and sophomore Eli Bray added a rushing touchdown.

Bolsa Grande 53, Workman 6: Ethan Nguyen had a career-game to lead Bolsa Grande to a dominant win over Workman at Bolsa Grande High.

Nguyen completed 11 of 15 passes for 202 yards and four touchdowns. He also ran for a touchdown.

Phu Nguyen caught five passes for 138 yards with three touchdowns and returned a punt 80 yards.

David Nguyen rushed for 113 yards on just eight attempts with a touchdown for Bolsa Grande (1-0).

Oscar Rodriguez led the defense with a sack and an interception.

El Dorado 35, Valley Christian 0: El Dorado used its dominant running game to wear down Valley Christian in its season opener.

Diego Soria led the effort with 110 yards on 14 carries with two touchdowns.

Isaiah Quintero added 97 yards on 9 carries with a touchdown for El Dorado (1-0).

Nathan Meek and Gaven Rivera each caught touchdown passes from quarterback Nate Bento.

Evan Campuzano had an interception for the Golden Hawks.

Dana Hills 21, University 14: Christian Guarascio led Dana Hills to a nonleague win over University at Dana Hills High.

The senior running back rushed for 259 yards and two touchdowns for the Dolphins (1-0).

Connor Vernon passed for 202 yards in his varsity debut and connected with Blaize Bolter four times for 131 yards.

Noah Brown had a 20-yard touchdown reception for Dana Hills and Ethan Brougham led the defense with 18 tackles and a pair of sacks.

 

No. 21 Orange 42, Pacifica 7: Freshman quarterback Oscar Rios completed 15 of 20 passes for 281 yards  and two touchdowns in his varsity debut for the Panthers (1-0).

Rios also ran for a touchdown. Kobe Boykin rushed for 108 yards and a touchdown and had 104 receiving yards and caught a touchdown pass. Jonathan Smith added 125 receiving yards with a touchdown.

Orange sophomore Ardwon Morris had 10 tackles including a sack and forced a fumble. Jaelen Lightfoot contributed nine tackles.

Orange plays Villa Park on Friday, Aug. 26 at El Modena.

No. 23 Huntington Beach 20, Mayfair 13: The Oilers got four turnovers including Nathan Tauanuu’s interception that he returned 32 yards for a touchdown in their win over the Monsoons at Bellflower High.

Musashi Ray also had an interception. Nicholas Loboda recovered two fumbles. AJ Vandermade had four receptions for 125 yards and one touchdown.

Huntington Beach (1-0) plays Summit on Thursday, Aug. 25, at Huntington Beach High.

No. 3 Los Alamitos 41, Garces of Bakersfield 0: USC-committed quarterback Malachi Nelson threw five long touchdown passes in the first half, including two each to Gavin Porch and Ethan O’Connor, to lead the visiting Griffins (1-0).

Nelson tossed touchdowns of 41 and 50 yards to Porch and 51 and 66 yards to O’Connor. He added a 48-yard strike to Chase Grosfeld.

Western 42, Chino 0: Josh Faulkner ran for two touchdowns and had a touchdown reception for the Pioneers in their win at Chino High.

Junior quarterback Anthony Luna threw four touchdown passes. Malachi Alatorre scored on a 50-yard touchdown reception and had 11 tackles. Ayden Ware added two receiving touchdowns and nine tackles, three of them for losses.

Western (1-0) plays at St. Margaret’s on Friday.

Calvary Chapel 25, Carpenteria 0: The Eagles defense forced six turnovers, five on interceptions and one fumble recovery, in their win at Segerstrom High.

Gavin Ghahyasi returned an interception for a touchdown. Robbie Thomas had two interceptions and Jackson Pellkofer and Luke Huffman had the other interceptions.

Eagles quarterback Matt Peters rushed for two touchdowns.

Calvary Chapel (1-0) plays Capistrano Valley Christian on Thursday, Aug. 25 at Segerstrom.
