Angel City Football Club went through another painful experience last week, losing a two-goal lead on the way to a loss to OL Reign.
With the schedule winding down in its first season, Angel City will get another chance to get back on track as it heads to visit the Orlando Pride (4 p.m., Paramount +, BSSC).
“Initially everyone was pretty angry and upset with ourselves for letting a 2-0 lead go,” midfielder Savannah McCaskill said. “I think everyone is focused back in and in training the last couple of days have been really good and everyone is focused and sharp.
“We watched the film, learned the lessons and everyone is willing to put the work in to try to not let that happen again and I think that’s the most important part. I think everyone is set on going out this weekend and getting the result that we need.”
Heading into the weekend, Angel City (5-5-2) sat in seventh place (17 points) in the NWSL standings, still in striking distance for one of the six playoff spots. Including this game, Angel City has 10 remaining.
In two of its last three games, Angel City have shown the inability to close out results. Against the Portland Thorns (July 1), Angel City allowed a late stoppage time goal to settle for a 1-1 draw and then there was last week’s loss to OL Reign.
“This is a team which is very hungry to experience success and is hungry to win games and is a team that believes we can win games and should be winning games,” Angel City coach Freya Coombe said. “It’s fantastic to see that kind of response from the group and they’ve certainly trained really hard this week. They sort of dug in and really made sure that we’re not going to experience and put in a performance like that second half.
“We’re so bitterly disappointed in the manner in which we finished the game and not to get something out of it. To see that disappointment is a good thing in terms of it shows that we’re not accepting of results like that.”
