While Southern Californians along the coast dealt with persistent June gloom on Friday, the Inland Empire was scorching, in some places 30 degrees hotter than coastal areas.

But a slow cool-off throughout the region is expected into early next week, forecasters said.

Temperatures Friday in the Inland Empire were likely to be about 10 to 15 degrees above the seasonal average, said Casey Oswant, a meterologist for the National Weather Service. The region will see a cooling over the weekend, with high temperatures expected in the mid to upper-90s range Saturday, and by Sunday, in the low 90s.

San Jacinto tied its 2019 high temperature record for June 10 at 102 degrees and Idyllwild hit 92 degrees, three degrees higher than its 2019 record.

Similar temperatures were being felt Friday in the Los Angeles valleys and around the San Bernardino Mountains. By Sunday, however, an increase in marine layer depth will bring a noticeable cool down in the LA valleys and inland, forecasters said.

The coast experienced cooler temperatures, along with inland Orange County, which was about 10 degrees cooler than the Inland Empire, protected by the marine layer and low clouds hanging along the coastline Friday, Oswant said.

While the heat was mostly dry heat through the region, a moisture pattern affected the Riverside Mountains and Coachella Valley brought monsoonal-like clouds over the area Friday and expected Saturday.

Beyond the heat, wind gusts are likely to impact the Coachella Valley region and the high desert through Sunday. Top gusts could reach up to 40-50 mph in the deserts and mountain areas.

The winds are predicted to carry over into Monday afternoon and evening, but die down by Tuesday, Oswant said.

And while there will be slight respite from the heat Sunday and Monday, forecasters predict temperatures to warm up again Tuesday into Thursday.
