Corona del Mar’s boys golf team celebrated arguably the wildest championship run of the school year last week.
The Sea Kings received their championship plaque, patches, medals and shirts for winning the CIF-SS Division 1 team title during an on-campus presentation made by section commissioner Rob Wigod.
“It was pretty cool,” said veteran coach Corona del Mar coach Mike Starkweather, who retired after the season. “We had a lot of coaches’ heads turning at school.”
The ceremony came about 2 1/2 weeks after Corona del Mar was declared the Division 1 champion following the forfeiture of the title by Palm Desert for having illegal contact with its players the Sunday before the final.
Palm Desert reportedly practiced at Western Hills Country Club in Chino Hills on Sunday, and according to the section, self-reported the violation.
