Angels bring Jo Adell back to the majors to replace injured Taylor Ward

PHILADELPHIA — Taylor Ward’s sore hamstring led to another chance for Jo Adell.

The Angels called up Adell and put him in right field on Sunday afternoon, when Ward was placed on the injured list with right hamstring tightness.

Manager Joe Maddon said Ward’s condition is “not awful. It just needs attention.”

Ward would be eligible to be activated on June 14 at Dodger Stadium.

“Hopefully it’s just going to be minimal time,” Maddon said. “It didn’t indicate to me conversationally it’s going to be more than that, but you never know.”

In the meantime, Adell has a chance to show if he’s made an improvements from his first stint in the majors this season.

Adell was on the Opening Day roster, but he was sent down a month into the season because he was hitting .215 with a .627 OPS, and also struggling in the outfield.

At Triple-A, Adell got off to a fast start, with a 1.032 OPS and five homers in his first 40 at-bats. Over his last 41 at-bats, he had a .477 OPS with one homer.

Maddon conceded that Adell would not have gotten called up at this time if not for Ward’s injury, but he was hopeful that he can still be productive. The Angels have lost 10 games in a row, so they’ll take any spark they can get.

“Just get him up here and turn him loose a little bit and see if he can help us,” Maddon said.

Adell said he had been working hard at Triple-A on his offense and defense.

“Just trying to continue to make myself as comfortable as I can be,” Adell said. “Do the small stuff. That stuff ends up being big here at this level. Just a lot of early work and just trying to prepare to be better and play better and keep moving forward.”

The other question is how the playing time will be distributed. While Ward is on the injured list, Adell would seem to have an opportunity to play every day — although Maddon wouldn’t commit to that on Sunday. If Ward comes back next week, the Angels will again have four outfielders for three spots, along with Brandon Marsh and Mike Trout.

“I’m gonna have to make that work,” Adell said. “It’s something that I gotta adjust to. When you play on a team that’s competitive with a lot of good players, it is what it is. I don’t necessarily have to be out there every day. But for the days I am, I am going to try to compete the best I can.”
