Maryland women’s basketball announced Tuesday that Towson sophomore Allie Kubek has transferred to the program.
The 6-foot-2 forward comes to College Park after finishing second on the Tigers in scoring last season with 14.6 points per game while helping the team to a 24-8 record (14-4 Colonial Athletic Association).
Maryland coach Brenda Frese said Kubek, who also averaged 6.2 rebounds per game, is a dynamic front-court player who can score in different ways.
“She’ll be able to help us stretch the defense and space the floor,” Frese said in a release. “She can get her own shot and she’s shown she can really be a factor rebounding the ball. Allie addresses a lot of needs for us.”
Kubek, who played at Sanford School in Hockessin, Delaware, and was the state’s 2020 Gatorade Player of the Year, scored in double figures in 25 of 31 games this past season.
As a freshman, Kubek was named to the All-CAA Rookie Team after averaging 8.8 points and a team-best 7.1 rebounds while starting in all 22 games. Kubek was the first Tigers freshman to start in every game since 2006-07.
“I chose Maryland because I wanted to spend the next three years playing the sport I love for Coach Frese and her staff at Maryland’s flagship university!” Kubek said. “The team made me feel super comfortable. It felt like family right away.”
Kubek, an Elkton native, is Maryland’s sixth addition in the last month, joining top-60 recruits Brianna McDaniel and Gia Cooke, as well as transfers Elisa Pinzan (South Florida), Abby Meyers (Princeton) and Brinae Alexander (Vanderbilt). Meanwhile, incoming freshmen Ava Sciolla and Mila Reynolds signed with Maryland in November.
Frese has quickly reshaped the roster after watching five players, including All-Americans Angel Reese and Ashley Owusu, enter the transfer portal. Owusu announced her commitment to Virginia Tech on Sunday.
Maryland men’s basketball guard Eric Ayala declares for NBA draft
Maryland men’s basketball senior guard Eric Ayala has declared for the 2022 NBA draft, the league announced last week. He also plans to hire an agent, according to CBS Sports.
Last year, Ayala entered the draft but elected to return for his senior season, in which he averaged 14.7 points and 4.6 rebounds to earn All-Big Ten Conference honorable mention.
The 6-5 Ayala, who ranks 21st in program history with 1,432 career points, had a nine-game stretch earlier in the season in which he scored at least 16 points. His best game came in a 94-87 overtime win against Northwestern on Jan. 12 when he had 26 points and 11 rebounds.
Ayala averaged 11.6 points while shooting 40.2% from the field during his four-year career in College Park. The Delaware native averaged 14.7 points over the past two seasons.
Ayala’s final game was a 17-point effort in a loss to Michigan State during the Big Ten Tournament in March.
