Mission Viejo’s dominant run through the CIF-SS softball playoffs delivered the team a tough assignment Sunday with the release of the CIF State SoCal regional pairings.
The Division 2 champion Diablos (26-5) were placed in Division I for next week’s regional tournament and received a first-round game Tuesday at Gahr (23-9), one of the semifinalists from Division 1 in the Southern Section.
“I think (we) are up for the challenge,” Mission Viejo coach Clint Watson said. “We are going to be ready to go Tuesday.”
Mission Viejo outscored its playoff opponents 22-1 en route to the Division 2 crown. The South Coast League champion is led by seniors Sammi Woods and Shayna Glass, and ace Sofia Elliott, who will face several fellow up-and-coming sophomores on the Gahr roster.
Three other Orange County teams will also be in action on Tuesday.
Tesoro (20-12), the CIF-SS Division 3 runner-up, plays at South Hills (24-4) in Division II.
In Division III, El Toro (20-10), the CIF-SS Division 5 runner-up, travels to Temple City (25-6), the Division 4 champion in the Southern Section.
