Funner, the city that houses Harrah’s Resort Southern California, has a new mayor in town.
Actress, author and comedian Jane Lynch was elected as Funner’s first female mayor on Monday, May 16. She succeeds celebrity mayors Rob Riggle and David Hasselhoff.
The celebrity mayor position began after the casino’s rebranding strategy and expansion. Part of the effort was naming the 40-acre lot that houses the property “Funner” and having it recognized as a new city and GPS destination.
The mayor of Funner isn’t your typical electoral candidate with voters and opposing political campaigns. It also doesn’t require the celebrity to perform any governmental duties or city obligations. However, the process of becoming mayor does feature similar rituals, like an inauguration ceremony and the presentation of the key to the city.
The celebrity is chosen by the casino’s internal marketing team and will help lead the casino in several promotions such as spa treatments, food items and cocktail menus.
Lynch doesn’t drink alcohol, but she worked with the casino to create a “mocktail menu” with drinks such as, “A Toast to Mayor Jane!” made with hibiscus herbal tea, raspberry syrup, lime, mint, and raspberry foam. The actress is also vegan and is working with the casino’s kitchens to create vegan dishes.
Guests at Harrah’s Resort Southern California can also call a hotline to listen to bedtime stories and other prerecorded messages by Lynch.
According to a press release from the casino, Lynch will also help launch Gordan Ramsay’s Hell’s Kitchen, which is expected to open later this summer.
