ANAHEIM — Trevor Zegras tied the Ducks’ rookie record for points in a season, Troy Terry had two goals and an assist and Derek Grant had a goal and two assists, helping goaltender John Gibson end a 13-game winless streak with a 6-4 victory Sunday over the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Zegras had a goal and an assist for his 56th and 57th points, matching Bobby Ryan’s franchise record for rookies in 2008-09. Terry scored his team-leading 35th and 36th goals, the most by a Duck since Corey Perry had 43 goals in 2013-14. Gibson won for the first time since March 1.
Zegras and Cam Fowler scored early in the third period to give the Ducks a 5-3 lead. Cole Sillinger cut the Ducks’ lead to 5-4 with a goal at 7:22 of the third. Fowler also had an assist to set a career high with 41 points this season. His old mark of 40 points was set in 2010-11.
Gibson made 30 saves.
The Ducks built a 3-1 lead by the end of the first period, with Terry scoring twice and narrowly missing on a couple of other scoring chances. Gerry Mayhew scored the Ducks’ third goal off an assist from Zegras, a slick centering pass from the right wing to his unmarked teammate.
Jake Bean scored Columbus’ first two goals and Sean Kuraly then tied it 3-3 at 10:52 of the second period. A failed clearing attempt led to Bean’s second goal, only 1:34, into the second period. An errant pass from Sam Steel then ended up in the Ducks’ net for a 3-3 tie.
Terry nearly completed a hat trick, but his second-period shot ricocheted off the left goal post and out of harm’s way. In the first period, he had two chances at scoring a third goal, but failed to convert. There was no telling what a 4-1 lead after 20 minutes would have meant for the Ducks.
Terry was credited with a team-high seven shots on goal through two periods. Additionally, he had seven of the Ducks’ 13 scoring chances in the first 40 minutes. He had a season-high eight shots in Thursday’s loss to Tampa Bay.
